Paxil Class Action Lawsuit Filed in Philadelphia
April 9, 2006
A federal class action lawsuit was filed in Philadelphia
today against area drug maker Glaxo SmithKline and its
prescription medication Paxil. The lawsuit seeks damages
from the drug maker for the families of two young people
who committed suicide while on Paxil. Because the lawsuit
is a class-action suit it names anyone under the age of
18 who has taken Paxil and experienced side effects like
suicidal thoughts or actions. The families of these young
people are also included in the suit...

Pennsylvania Sued Over Prisoner Rights
April 9, 2006
The Pennsylvania Protection and Advocacy group is suing
the state over its policy to charge copy fees that basically
make it impossible for people to examine public records
regarding the state’s prison population. The group is a
prisoner’s rights group that is concerned with mentally
ill prisoners and their treatment while in custody. They
estimate that as many as 20 percent of the prison population
in the state has some form of mental illness...

Landlord Accountability Law Passes
in Philadelphia
March 22, 2006
Under a new Philadelphia law landlords of rental units
must now ensure that their units adhere to the city’s building
codes before renting them out to tenants. Mayor John Street
signed the bill into law last week after considering it
for two weeks. Critics are contending that the new laws
are practically unenforceable and won’t do anything to
stem landlord liability issues with tenants living in unsafe
conditions.

Red Light Camera Controversy in
Philadelphia

Recent numbers from the Philadelphia Parking Authority
show that new red light cameras installed at intersections
around the city are having their desired effect by curbing
red-light running. The cameras are set up at several Northeast
Philadelphia intersections notorious for their traffic
accidents and violations involving red light running.

Premises Liability Issues at Stake
March 16, 2006
A recent legal case involving a concert, a drunk driver
and an injured victim has brought challenges to who can
be held liable in a personal injury case. The incident
occurred at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey at
a 2004 Jimmy Buffett concert. A man who had been drinking
heavily before the concert in the arena’s parking lot,
later drove while under the influence, striking and injuring
Karl Pulliam, a motorcyclist leaving the concert as well.

Pennsylvania Seatbelt Laws May
Change
March 15, 2006
Col. Jeffrey Miller, the commander of the Pennsylvania
State Police, is spearheading an effort to change state
laws in order to allow police to make traffic stops for
not wearing a seatbelt. Current state laws do not allow
police to stop drivers or passengers who are not clearly
wearing their seatbelts. Miller says that the new, tougher
laws will result in fewer accidents because more people
would wear their seatbelts if they were aware of the law.
