At Reiff & Bily, our civil rights attorneys aggressively
protect the rights of clients who have been the victims
of discrimination and civil rights violations. Our personal
injury lawyers have the skill to represent clients in many
areas of civil rights and discrimination litigation, including
age, sex, gender, race, religious, and disability discrimination.
If you believe that your civil rights have been violated
you may be able to file a civil rights claim against the
person, showing them that intolerant behavior and actions
are not acceptable.
A civil right is a right that has been created by the
Federal or State government which is protected by the United
States Constitution or an individual State’s Constitution.
As an American you are entitled to many important civil
rights including freedom of speech, press, assembly, freedom
from involuntary servitude, the right to vote, and the
right to equality in public places. No one may deny an
individual his or her civil rights due to race, physical
limitation, religion, age, sex, and national origin. To
do so is illegal, and if proven guilty the person who violated
another individual’s civil rights will harsh punishment.
There are a variety of Federal laws that further protect
your rights, which include the following:
- American Disabilities Act- prohibits employees from
being discriminated against solely on the basis of a
physical or mental disability.
- Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967- implemented
to protect older workers from being discriminated against
in the workplace, such as being fired, segregated, or
not being hired due to age (forty or over).
- Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972-established
to protect the rights of students in the United States
who attend federally funded schools.
- Equal Pay Act-enacted to ensure that men and women
who perform comparable work are paid comparable wages,
thereby prohibiting gender in the workplace.
- Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964-prohibits
discrimination based on a person’s hair type, color
of skin, or facial features (lips, nose, and eyes).
In addition to the above listed Federal laws, many states
have also passed additional laws that specifically address
discrimination. If you have been discriminated against
or have been the victim of a civil rights violation, you
need an attorney to protect your legal rights.
