Dangerous or Defective Toys

On a daily basis, children and infants are seriously injured because of dangerous, unsafe, or defective toys. It can be devastating for a guardian or parent to discover that a child was seriously injured or killed by playing with a defective or dangerous toy.

Unfortunately, many dangerous and defective products are widely available in stores across the United States. In addition to defective toys, children can be seriously hurt by defective cribs, furniture, child car seats, or clothing.  Dangerous toys can cause burn injuries, cuts and bruises, scars, broken bones, head injuries, disfigurement, or lead to choking, strangulation, blindness, permanent disabilities, or death. Toy manufacturers of dangerous toys must be held responsible for any resulting physical injuries or deaths their products cause.  For more information about toy safety, please check the Federal of State Public Interest Research Groups' Toy Safety webpage.

Some toys are recalled due to dangerous toxins found in them such as lead based paint.  Lead poisoning often occurs with no obvious symptoms and frequently goes unrecognized. Approximately 310,000 U.S. children aged 1-5 years have blood lead levels that would require medical care.  Lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, behavioral problems, reduced IQ, stunted growth, hearing loss, seizures, coma, and even death in children under the age of 6.  For an up-to-date recall list, please check the Toy Hazard Recalls webpage of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission or the Lead Paint Toy Recalls website./p>
