Philadelphia Man Fractures Back at Great Adventure Water Park
A Philadelphia man suffered a broken back last Thursday at Great Adventure Hurricane Harbor water park in Jackson, New Jersey while riding a water slide known at the Tornado, The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. when David Beltz and three other people were riding a raft down a new ride at Great Adventure. The ride known as "The Tornado" is a new attraction at the water park this year and is currently one of Hurricane Harbor’s main attractions. Apparently while riding the raft, Mr. Beltz was thrown or ejected with tremendous pressure causing the resulting fracture and other injuries. Park attendants were called to the scene and had to remove Mr. Beltz from the landing pool. He was stretchered and transported by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Hamilton, New Jersey where he was hospitalized and found to have a "burst" fracture of his lower back which has resulted in some paralysis. Investigation is continuing.
Philadelphia amusement park and water park accident attorney, Jeffrey Reiff, of Reiff & Bily is representing the victim. When contacted for comment Reiff stated that as new technology and ride designers push the safety envelope attempting to boost the thrill factor, many times proper safety testing or protocols are not always followed and serious accidents occur injuring and sometimes unfortunately killing unsuspecting thrill seeking victims. Many times, we find that amusement parks put profits over safety as a concern. Reiff further stated that many times rides are operated or monitored by young teenagers not properly paying attention in many cases, and as a recent amusement park case in Wisconsin indicated, under the influence of drugs or alcohol without proper testing or monitoring protocol.
